Legacy of Service

There are moments in life indelibly etched into our hearts. For me, one of those moments was my commissioning ceremony at the Naval Special Warfare Center Grinder—an event steeped in tradition and profound personal meaning.

My grandfather, Lehnig, who commissioned himself 55 years earlier, made the long journey from Dallas, Texas to be there. It was a trip we weren’t sure he could undertake, but he did. There he sat, proud and resolute on stage, two generations bound by service, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit.

What made it even more extraordinary was that we were both Navy Mustangs—officers who had ascended from the enlisted ranks. Being a Mustang is a testament to resilience, earned leadership, and the respect forged through firsthand experience. We both held this journey with immense reverence and gratitude.

In that solemn and surreal moment, my grandfather handed me the ceremonial sword—a gesture that transcends symbolism. In naval tradition, the sword embodies leadership, honor, and the profound responsibility of command. As he placed it in my hands, no words were necessary—the shared understanding and legacy of service spanning decades spoke volumes. It was more than a tribute; it was a living bridge between past and present, an embodiment of duty passed down through generations.

My grandfather passed the following year, but this moment—this testament to resilience and legacy—will remain with me forever. It reminds me that the greatest honors in life are shared with those who paved the way for us.

To those who served before us and those who will follow: may we always carry forward their stories, lessons, and indomitable spirit.
